Hello!

I’m Pamela, the artist behind Four + North, and after screen printing my own designs for over 15 years I have recently dipped my pen into surface pattern design.  Based in Maine, it's easy to find me out taking pictures of  wildflowers at our camp up north,  sketching birds spied in my backyard, and any interesting little textures nature presents—or back at my desk turning them into patterns.

My designs are inspired by nature’s small details and are often rooted in the symbolism of flowers and birds, with little hints of meaning woven in along the way. I like to keep things a bit playful and a bit imperfect, mixing organic shapes, soft textures, and color in ways that feel easygoing and full of life.

Mostly, I just enjoy making patterns that feel good to look at and fun to use—whether they end up on tea towels, fabric, paper, or something else entirely. Thanks for stopping by 🌿

My new passion is floriography!  What is it you ask???

It's the secret language of flowers!

Quite a bit of my new work has touched on the meaning of the flowers, birds and bugs themselves.  When you group the flowers together you create a message to the giver. I wanted to use this language of flowers within my work to give it more meaning. As an artist, I'm forever changing subjects and playing around with different techniques.  Over the past year or so I have collected over 6 art journals full of sketches to creates fun designs and patterns to come!

The bouquet above is my PEACE AND CALM bouquet.  Originally from many different drawings, I was able to create and manipulate in my design program.  It consists of:

Lavender - serenity

Chamomile -  calmness

Queen Anne's Lace - sanctuary

Hypericum (pink berries) - protection

A little more information about FLORIOGRAPHY:

It was popular back in the 19th century in Victorian times as a way to share feelings safely when it was not appropriate to talk about out in the open.

Ever get upset when someone you have strong feelings for only gives you a yellow rose (friendship), when you were hoping for a red rose (love)?!  Same idea. . .
